The timeless and popular appeal of Portland stone inspired Casalgrande Padana to translate its aesthetic into a new stoneware format fit for a variety of settings

The pale, creamy Portland stone of the cliffs of Dorset on the south coast of England has a timeless, elegant appeal. The material has been used across centuries for grand and classic British landmarks such as Westminster Palace and the Tower of London. Yet it has also been adopted by contemporary architects such as John Pawson and Vincent van Duysen, bringing warmth to minimalist designs.

The stone's neutral tones and delicate veining has inspired interior trends from 'soft brutalism' to 'quiet luxury', becoming synonymous with calming residential sanctuaries and escapist wellness spaces. This timeless and popular appeal of Portland stone inspired Casalgrande Padana, Italian manufacturer of modern ceramic materials, to translate its aesthetic into a new stoneware format – a more practical and affordable alternative to the stone that is just as visually appealing and far more versatile for modern life.

The six colour variations – Lithos Beige, Bianco, Grigio, Nero, Taupe and Tortora – span from cool to warm tones in order to easily match existing architecture or define new palettes

Shaping an experience

The result is Lithos, a collection of Portland stone-effect tiles available in a wide range of sizes, thicknesses, colours and textures with which architects and designers can smoothly curate and shape an atmosphere. The six colour variations – Lithos Beige, Bianco, Grigio, Nero, Taupe and Tortora – span from cool to warm tones, ideal for matching to existing architecture and defining new palettes. Each colour is shaded with organic detailing, cloudy effects, subtle touches of light, and distinctive graphics, which evoke the same richness and sophistication of organic stone. While three textures – satin, natural and matte – expand the tactility and sensory effects of space.

While the beauty of Lithos is worthy of high-end residential, heritage and cultural interiors; it's also equipped for the high-use, tough spaces that require frequent cleaning

As well as mirroring the sophisticated aesthetics of stone, Lithos offers more versatility to how these aesthetics can transform space. The ceramic stoneware tiles can be used as a total solution at a far lower budget to natural stone – and with the technical capabilities of creating an immersive feel across in many scenarios from exteriors, interiors, flooring and coverings. The tiles are easy to install; and as well as standard sizes, there's a series of mosaic, tesserae, and a canneté decoration tile for a tailored custom design. Plus, they can be seamlessly designed in combination with other Casalgrande Padana collections – overall bringing far more freedom to the imagination of the architect.

The porcelain ceramic of the Lithos range is non-absorbent and resistant to wear and tear, abrasion, fire and thermal shock – making it a versatile choice for outdoor as well as residential and commercial settings

Stronger than stone
While the beauty of Lithos is worthy of high-end residential, heritage and cultural interiors; it's also equipped for the high-use, tough spaces that require frequent cleaning such as public, contract and hospitality sectors. Unlike stone, which requires periodical sealing and special cleaning products, the porcelain ceramic of the Lithos range is non-absorbent and resistant to wear and tear, abrasion, fire and thermal shock – all the while importantly preserving its appearance over time. Casalgrande Padana's 'Bios Ceramics' technology, available on request, can be applied to this new collection, combining technical performance with antibacterial, self-cleaning properties able to reduce polluting agents.

Crucial to all architects working today, the tiles are made of a material that can be held accountable for its environmental properties. Like all of its porcelain stoneware collections, Lithos is composed of natural raw materials. Casalgrande Padana's precise process of design and manufacture – proudly based in Italy from start to finish – is monitored at each step for compliance to sustainability, enabling the recycling and full recovery of all components in the process, therefore resulting in virtually zero emissions and dispersion.

Translating a material as old as time into an innovative product is no easy feat – yet the Lithos collection has found a balance between capturing the natural aesthetics, colour and texture of Portland stone, all whilst equipping it to meet the – let's face it, often uncompromising – expectations of contemporary design, whether that be high footfall and consequentially tough cleaning regimens, or clients that demand materials to maintain their appearance over time and stay 'picture perfect'. When it comes to meeting these expectations, the Lithos collection tips the balance.
